Laura Pursell – “Ode to Billy Joe”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Laura Pursell’s version of Bobbie Gentry’s song “Ode to Billy Joe” from Laura’s recently released album Shooting Star. Shooting Star was produced and mixed by Kenny Meredieth and recorded at Deep End Music Studios in Burbank, California.
Musicians on “Ode to Billy Joe” are Laura Pursell on vocals; Chris Ross on drums; Jeff Takaguchi on bass; Rick Hils on piano; and Kenny Meredieth on guitars.
This video was produced and directed by Laura Pursell and Netcom Music. Honoring a song that shook the country back 50 some-odd years ago is this thoughtful rendition with a shaker beat, general restraint, and a touch of swagger. The intrigue is all still there as they pass the biscuits at the dinner table. “Seems like nothing ever comes to no good up on Choctaw ridge…it don’t seem right.” And what were they throwing off that bridge? The video of Laura singing is as compelling as they come, interspersed with vintage dinner table footage.
“Ode To Billy Joe” has always been one of my favorite songs. So, I’m really excited to celebrate the anniversary of its release and am thrilled to have added this song to my latest album Shooting Star. – Laura Pursell
