“Goat On A Stone Wall” is Erin Ash Sullivan on vocals, guitar, and ukulele; and Doug Kwartler on everything else. Lively bluegrass layers buoy up this song about a stubborn need to be honest and true to yourself.  Goats, through their sure-footedness, represent the firm stances that need to be taken at least once in awhile, that’s the metaphorical intention of this song. Erin Ash Sullivan delivers a whimsically cathartic songwriting style.

This is a “sorry not sorry” song—which is to say that it’s an apology to a loved one from someone who loses their temper, speaks in haste, and then immediately regrets stepping over the line….but it’s clear that the apologizer has no real intention of ever actually changing their ways (“I swear it’s not my nature to be so unkind/But still sometimes I just forget/The simple rules that nicer people seem to get”). I write a lot of my songs while I’m out walking in my tiny town of Harvard, Massachusetts—and on a recent walk I locked eyes with a sassy-looking pygmy goat who was, in fact, standing on a stone wall. That was the starting point for this song, and I finished it in a workshop with the amazing Cosy Sheridan. – Erin Ash Sullivan
