Prinz Grizzley – Dear Leftovers

Prinz Grizzley hails from Austria, and tours through Ireland and Europe and is gracing us with his  7th full length album Dear Leftovers.  The arrangements in this album are classic country and Western, folk and old timey styles with lots of easy pedal steel, stringed instruments and easy tempos.

“Corinna” is a song about still being able to love, in a story of Jimmy Buffet – folk blend: “if you need me, I promise I will be there.”  “Take My Pride” is a western sounding slow dance that repeats the relatable refrain: “Take my pride and let me go.”  The waltz has roots in Austrian music, which serves as a nexus with American folk country styles. “Got Nothing to Prove” is a bluesy rock song about personal evolution and looking to brighter days ahead.

“Wicked Heart” is a rootsy rock ‘n roll number  that treats the subject matter of being treated badly and laughed at by someone you care about.  On this song, Prinz Grizzley achieves some Todd Park Mohr – sounding vocal tones within the grooves.  “Woman Don’t” has a wah-wah in a happy folk rock setting.

The thread of this album runs through a range of Americana based styles and is a unique hybrid cross pollinating with traditional Austrian music as well; it’s finely played and satisfying and intriguing to listen to.

Musicians on the album are Prinz Grizzley on vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, dobro and organ, and The Beargaroos:  Johannes Bischof on pedal steel guitar, mandoline, and backing vocals; Claude Meier on electric and upright bass and backing vocals; and Andreas Wettstein on drums and percussions, and backing vocals. Additional Musicians on the album are Heidi Caviezel on backing vocals, and George Nussbaumer on piano and Fender Rhodes.
