Mac Cornish – Never Made Much of a Lover

Mac Cornish has a new album that’s one of those authentic throwback albums where the pedal steel is melodious and the drums are snappy and Patsy Cline and Laurel Canyon is in the aura, Never Made Much of a Lover.

The first song is an ode to old style love affairs – the kind her mama had, as the song is a query to her mother “why can’t I be more like my mama? she was my age when she married my papa?  Where I’ll be in a year I can’t tell ya’.” “Mama, Yes I Do.”  Will he be true?

“Loma Pieta (in ’89)” “As I sit in his Ranger and cry, telling him this shall be our very last time, somehow I know what I’ve done is right, even though this load I carry, it sure ain’t light.”   “Sylvia Anne” picks up the tempo to double time and some plucky bass: “Sylvia Anne … waiting on your man … what have you done, even though it’s not true, what did he do to you?”

“Belle of the Bar” is a sow country honky tonk waltz with Mac Cornish’s crooning deliver at the forefront. “she’s got that look in her eye like she won’t be going home alone tonight, oh … don’t take my man from me… belle of the bar, queen of the dive, shy of 25… oh and she’s drinkin’ just to survive.”

Mac has raw, honest sounding vocals and her songwriting is so classic you’ll wonder at first if this was long lost material from 1960’s country vault. This instantly classic collection was recorded at Singing Sands in Portland, Oregon by Kyle Patrick Cregan, over the span of 10 days. It was engineered by Kyle Cregan, mixed by Ryan Oxford and mastered by Amy Dragon at Telegraph Mastering.
