Paul Overstreet – “All I Ever Wanted To Be (Was A Cowboy)”

Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Paul Overstreet’s song “All I Ever Wanted To Be (Was A Cowboy).”   The music was produced by Christopher Harris and Paul Overstreet, engineered by Brandon Lee Harris; mixed and mastered by Kent Hooper.

“All I Ever Wanted To Be (Was A Cowboy) is Paul Overstreet on lead vocals, background vocals, and acoustic guitar;  Christopher Harris on bass, background vocals and percussion; Brandon Lee Harris on piano, Scotty Sanders on pedal steel; Wanda Vick on fiddle and mandolin.

This video was filmed by Brandon Lee Harris and Julie Overstreet, and edited by Brandon Lee Harris with photos from the book “Wrestling The World: The Life and Times of Rodeo Champion Jack Roddy by Katie Cooney.”  A loping beat and pedal steel sets up the Western feel, and Paul sings this song in a emotionally connective, beautiful way. “Old coyotes wouldn’t let me sleep…. days on end with nothin’ much to eat. But all I ever wanted to be was a cowboy, riding my pony on the range… and I’d do it all again just for the thrill.” The video is Paul singing at the corner of a barn, and then it shows old actual photos from the book. The whole thing feels like a piece of history, the song, the music and the vocals included.

Yes, it was so much pleasure working on this song with Chris Harris. Taking some of the stories from the book about Jack Roddy and his life and his experiences was so much fun. Putting those thoughts and those experiences into poetic form and then coming up with some music that made it seem real was just an absolute pleasure. I congratulate him on all of his successes, and hopefully people will enjoy the song that we put together in his honor. – Paul Overstreet
