Michael Witt – “Whistle in the Holler”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Michael Witt’s song “Whistle in the Holler” from their upcoming 3-track live EP entitled Born at the Funeral set to be released later this year. Self-produced, “Whistle in the Holler” was filmed and recorded live at Taylor Friesth’s Garden Groove Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. The track was mixed and mastered by Jackson Maddox, and engineered by Maddox and Taylor Friesth.
Featuring Ray Duncan on piano and vocals; Kris Luis on bass guitar; Nic Foster on drums; and Michael Witt on lead vocals and guitar, “Whistle in the Holler” is a freak-folk manifestation of nature’s quiet, and sometimes overwhelming, majesty. Listening to the song makes you feel like you are floating in the firmament encapsulated by the hypnotic melodies reverberating from Witt’s guitar and Duncan’s piano. The gentle beat driving the song forward provided by Luis and Foster leads listeners into a dreamlike landscape that is as calming as it is restorative.
When I wrote it, I was trying to express both my love for my partner and my reverence for our planet. But, as the song continued to evolve, and I alongside it, I have come to realize that I am also singing this song to myself; to the feminine spirit that permeates my soul. When I sing, ‘Whistle in the Holler,’ I feel like I am singing to a divine trinity that includes my romantic partner, my own spirit, and Mother Earth. The song is both a romantic attempt to express my undying love for this world and a recognition that my words will never fully capture the essence of the experience of being alive.” – Michael Witt
