Dewey Kincade – Standing on a Rock

Dewey Kincade has a new album Standing on a Rock, co-produced with Grammy nominee Andrew McKenna Lee. Mr. Lee also mixed the album.

“Why” sets the bar up pretty high for the album with bright and shiny heartland rock arrangements.  “When Your Ship Goes Down” is electric guitar step down playing that’ll send chills down the back of your neck, and Dewey really belts out the vocals. He can sing. This is a big band feel, and you get the sense of the band on big stages: “when your ship goes down, who are you holding on to, now that you’re sinking down to the deep blue sea?”

“Standing on a Rock” with its “I’m just trying to beat the clock before I finally disappear down into the fire again” is an optimistic song of sorts, chronicling some of life’s ups and downs.

“Fairy Tales” reworks stories of Cinderella, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Little Red Riding Hood into some more realistic modern day tales.  “Get Out of Touch” is an enumeration of the chatter coming in from the news and constant information, as it suggests unplugging and turning it all off.  Cool little vocal cadence.  Later in the album, “As the Walls Fall Down” is more of an anthemic recounting of heavier global events with “as the cancer grows reason disappears”  and “There’s no such thing as security.”   Kincade’s vocal range is really emphasized here.  This one ends with an optimistic cascade.

This album takes a solid stand on the hallowed grounds of high energy blues rock and catchy roots foundations with realistic, sometimes dark, observations and electric guitars weaving off the rock ‘n roll rhythm section.

Musicians on the album are Dewey Kincade on guitar and vocals; Brian Griffin (the Black Crowes, Brandi Carlile) on drums and backing vocals;  Naren Rauch on guitar; and Darren Eboli on bass and backing vocals (Tribeca Tapes).
