Sugarcane Jane – On A Mission

Sugarcane Jane, fronted by duo Savana Lee and Anthony Crawford (guitar player for several years with Neil Young, Steve Winwood), has a new album On A Mission, which was produced by Anthony Crawford.  This album traces connections between Southern rock and country rock with a smattering of gospel.

“Try to Make It Look Like Me” has quick, blended vocal harmony based choruses: “it’s a good day for turning pages, I could use a little inspiration myself.”  “Love Moved Her Along” is spacious electric guitar power chords and a dreamy vocal effect.

The title track flexes the country rock side of Alabama’s Gulf Coast sweethearts in a song of reminiscence and coming back together.  “The Candle” is an appeal to the sky for letting one’s soul rest:  “no time, no place better than now.”  Live in the moment and enjoy the electric guitar melodies and the candle that’s burning.  “Burn” is a collection of electric guitar tracks and some psychedelic licks in a darker number that exposes the contradictions of relationship.

“Fly on the Wall” is a lighter arrangement with a bouncier rhythm, “it’s gonna take a miracle if it happens at all.”  “Put It In Your Pocket” is a country rock foot stomper and “Through the Day” continues in a more hushed way with acoustic guitar in an ode to losing your way and then finding it again: “In all the noise I hear his voice and again start listening.”

Crawford is an adept electric guitar player, and this album showcases those layers of what he can do.  The songs are lyrical explorations and the vocal duets feel real.  Musicians on the album are Anthony Crawford on vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, bass, and drums; Savana Lee on vocals; and Loretta Raine Crawford on vocals.
