The Coal Men – “Rather Be Right”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of The Coal Men’s song “Rather Be Right” from their forthcoming album Everett, which will be available on March 29.  This single, however, will be available on February 16. The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Dave Coleman at Howard’s Apartment Studio in Inglewood, Tennessee and mastered by Alex McCullough at True East Mastering.

The Coal Men

“Rather Be Right” is Dave Coleman on guitar and vocals; Dave Ray on drums and backing vocals; Paul Slivka on bass; with Jen Gunderman on Everett piano.  Some folks need to be right at any cost.  We all know a few.   In this song the Coal Men speak the truth about folks like this over great, punchy, driving rock ‘n roll. Go ahead and play song this in the presence of someone who needs to hear the wake-up call. Can’t hurt, right?

Carey Ott and I wrote “Rather Be Right” as a psycho analysis of our friends and relatives who get their priorities out of whack and refuse to hear anyone else or help themselves, you know the one-uppers, the “eleven-esseans.”

Ego is a heavy burden, but when it bleeds into vanity and self-righteousness, it gets in the way of love, and respect. I’m betting we’ve all been there, but we can always turn around to hear a new song.

Maybe a loud wake-up call from a cracking snare and a cranked Telecaster can ring the bell.

Jen Gunderman hammering down on the Everett piano, along with Dave Ray on drums & Paul Slivka on bass makes me feel like we kindly deliver the message that nobody is right all the time.

Sonically, we were inspired for the feel by Rockpile and NRBQ. I hope it gets in the ball park of those heroes to knock some self-awareness into anyone who thinks they’re never off base. – Dave Coleman
