Steve Drizos – “shadow life”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Steve Drizos’ song “shadow life” from his forthcoming album i love you now leave me alone, which is due to be released on Feb 16 via Cavity Search Records. The single, “shadow life” comes out Friday, February 2nd. i love you now leave me alone was produced, recorded, and mixed by Drizos at The Panther in Portland Oregon, and mastered by Jon Neufeld at Treehouse Mastering.

“shadow life” is Steve Drizos on guitar and vocals, Jenny Conlee (the Decemberists) on piano, Tim Murphy on bass, Todd Wright on guitar, and Joe Mengis on drums.  A cohort and sometimes member with Jerry Joseph’s band, Steve pulls the shade down to expose a degree of darkness in his musical style. It’s a Portland thing. Indeed this song in particular is about having been hiding in the darkness, not living your best life, and not being your authentic self.  But, then, thankfully, comes the process of “waking up from the shadow life.” All of this is sung over skilled electric guitar playing and dark piano.

‘shadow life’ is a phrase used to describe the idea that some people are living a life that is a shadow of what it is they are truly meant to be doing. Could be a career, could be a relationship, could be a place of residency. Some people recognize it and make a change, some don’t. The track features me on guitar and vocals, Jenny Conlee on piano, Tim Murphy on bass, Todd Wright on guitar, and Joe Mengis on drums. – Steve Drizos
