James Mastro – “Someday Someone Will Turn Your Head Around”

James Mastro has a new song “Someday Someone Will Turn Your Head Around” from his forthcoming album Dawn Of A New Error, due to be released via MPress Records on February 21. This song, however, will be released on January 19.  Dawn Of A New Error was produced by Tony Shanahan at Hobo Sound, engineered and mixed by James Frazee, and mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound.  This song was recorded by Gary Arnold at Gary’s Chop Shop for Radio Free Song Club.

“Someday Someone Will Turn Your Head Around” is James Mastro on vocals and acoustic guitar; Dave Schramm on electric guitar; Jeremy Chatzky on bass; Andy Burton on Hammond B3; Tony Shanahan on piano and synthesizer; Ron Metz on drums; and The Jersey City New Heights Gospel Group & The Radio Free Song Club Singers – George Usher, Kate Jacobs, Freedy Johnston, Amy Alison.

This song has a supremely catchy intro uptake, and a glorious gospelly chorus, while the recording is bright with a hooky guitar lick. And the message is loud and clear – something good could be around any corner, so lay down your burden and be prepared to let somebody turn your head around.  Might as well be positive.

We all need some sort of salvation at some point or other – whether it’s from a bad day at work, problems in a relationship, trying to pay bills. Sometimes solace comes unexpectedly: a song on the radio, a stranger smiling at you, a child reaching for his mother’s hand. Any number of things can turn your head around to a better place, you just have to have your antenna up to receive the signal. I’m an avid listener to the “Sinner’s Crossroads” gospel radio show on WFMU hosted by Kevin Nutt, where I’ve heard songs that have literally turned my head around. A bad day can suddenly become a good one when words of encouragement come out of the car speakers, or you hear a singer’s voice that has the same rasp you sometimes feel in your own voice. I wrote this song for a session I was doing with a large ensemble, and wanted to capture that same feel: you’re not alone, we’re in this together, and though things may seem tough now, you never know when someone’s gonna turn your head around. – James Mastro
