Ben Vaughn – “Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying”

Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Ben Vaughn’s version of the song  written by Labi Siffre: “Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying.” This song appeared on his  album Interpretations, which was just released last week. The album was produced, engineered and mixed by Ben Vaughn, and recorded at The Penthouse in Santa Monica, California.

All instruments and vocals on “Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying” were performed by Ben Vaughn.  This video was shot and directed by Zane North.  The concept of reinterpreting songs that have a certain allure and grandeur, but which somehow barely missed going super famous, is an intriguing one, and you can be sure, as you press play, that these songs have some je ne sais quois, a certain something special.   But more than that, Ben Vaughn brings a loving elegant energy to the songs that shines through.  On this one, “Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying,” you’ll absolutely feel the complex and passionate emotional energy that comes from being a human being.  “That’s why I don’t cry.”  But it’s slow and deliberate.

There are a lot of good songs out there that need to be heard. Why they initially fell through the cracks will forever be a mystery. “Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying” is one such song. Written and recorded by Labi Siffre in 1973, it was hit in the UK and Europe but remains unknown here in the U.S.. I only recently discovered it myself. I slowed it down and lowered the key. I really like where it landed. – Ben Vaughn
