John Surge and the Haymakers – “You’re So Right (feat Brennen Leigh)”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of John Surge and the Haymakers’ song “You’re So Right” from his album forthcoming Almost Time, due to be available on September 15 via Blackbird Record Label.  It was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Tommy Detamore (Jim Lauderdale/Sunny Sweeney).

“You’re So Right” is John Surge on vocals and acoustic guitar;  Randy Volin on vocals and electric guitars;  Brennen Leigh on harmony vocals;  Brad Fordham (Dave Alvin, Hayes Carll) on bass;  Floyd Domino (Asleep at the Wheel, Merle Haggard) on piano; Tom Lewis (Junior Brown) on drums; and Tommy Detamore (Jim Lauderdale) on pedal steel.

The video was shot and directed by Nic Capelle and Deb Morrison; and edited by Nic Capelle of Rockton Road Productions.  A casual honky tonk number, you’ll find yourself shuffling along to “You’re So Right” and feeling fine no matter where you are.  Pedal steel and Brennen Leigh’s clear harmonies are the icing on the cake.  Nice honest flow on the lyrics too. We can relate.

I would say the thread that runs through the album is barroom tales, people sharing their troubles, bragging, pontificating, their vulnerability. As a working band, we spend a lot of time in nightspots and there’s a lot of unfiltered conversation. I had my antenna up and those moments got captured and expanded into the songs I wrote for the album. This song is a straight up honky tonk shuffle with great back and forth play between lead guitar and pedal steel and the angelic voice of Brennen Leigh singing harmony vocals. — John Surge
