“Him and Her and Me” is Michelle on vocals and acoustic guitar; Jordan Snow on drums; Brian Westfall on bass; Brian Wilkie on electric guitar; and Kiley Moore on harmonies. With polyamory being quite the trend in some circles, this song confronts its shadowy side, and what happens when loyalties shift and it ends up just being a good old-fashioned betrayal. All done in a respectable honky tonk style.
“Him and Her and Me” is my favorite song on Both Sides of Lonely. I really like the story. From a songwriting point of view, I thought it was ambitious. I put it in the middle of the album because I wanted it to be kind of hidden. With my lyrics, you might not catch everything on the first listen. I like to hide little Easter eggs in there.
But “Him and Her and Me” is about being in a relationship where you don’t stick up for yourself. Where you don’t say, “Hey, wait a minute, I don’t like where this is going.” And it was your one chance to say something, and now the situation has spun out of control, and you don’t know how to get yourself out of this mess. More specifically, it’s about a woman who doesn’t say no when her partner asks if he can bring someone else home. And then she doesn’t say no when he asks to bring someone else home. And all of a sudden she’s realizing that it’s not just her and him anymore—it’s him and her and her and her and her and her, and then me, which is the last word since she’s last on his list. – Michelle Billingsley
