Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Sarah White covering Michael Nesmith’s song “Different Drum,” due to be available on February 17 via White Star Sound.  The song was produced, recorded and mixed by Stewart Myers (Liz Phair, Rachel Yamagata, Shawn Colvin) and mastered by Lurssen Mastering.

“Different Drum” is Sarah White on vocals; Stewart Myers on bass; Daniel Clarke (k.d. Lang, War on Drugs, Ryan Adams) on piano and Chamberlin; Charles Arthur (Slaid Cleaves) on guitars; Brian Jones (Agents of Good Roots) on drums; and  Stephen McCarthey (Jayhawks, Long Ryders) on backing vocals.

What better way to honor someone than to interpret their song?  “Different Drum” is carried forward as a timeless song by Sarah White’s achingly beautiful version.

We recorded this one live at Stewart’s (Myers) house. Brian’s kit was set up in the dining room and he was stuffed in the corner behind the table; I remember that because it was funny. It took one, maybe two takes. The goal was to make one more track for High Flyer, but in the end I decided not to use it. I didn’t think it fit the album. It grew on me later though; the more I played it I realized it made me really happy. Then I wanted to hear it all the time. — Sarah White
