The Heartless Bastards at Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA on 11/3
The Heartless Bastards are on tour to promote their latest album, A Beautiful Life, and they made a
stop at the world-famous Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. This is the first new album from the band since 2015. Technically it can be considered a solo album by front-woman Erika Wennerstrom who wrote and co-produced the album with an almost entirely new band behind her.
Wennerstrom and the band played to a very enthusiastic, near sold out crowd on a Wednesday night.
The performed songs from the latest album as well as earlier music and even did a couple from Erika’s
solo album, Sweet Unknown. They kicked off the set with one of my favorite tracks off the Arrow
album and then did “Letting Go” from her solo album. Other songs included “When I was Younger” and “Photograph” from the band’s latest release, A Beautiful Life.
Los Angeles based band Valley Queen opened the night and quickly grabbed the audience’s attention. Led by the powerful voice of Natalie Carol, this band was a great choice to open for Wennerstrom and the Heartless Bastards. I had never heard of Valley Queen before this show, but I am certain I will be
hearing more from them in the very near future. My friend, with whom I attended the show, a musician
himself, was very impressed and likened them to The Cranberries. I was inclined to agree.
Both of these bands are a testament to how good female-fronted bands can be and leads me to the
question, why don’t we hear these bands being played on the radio?
