Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Brian Lisik’s song “Junior High School,” available on April 17, from his upcoming album Gudbye Stoopid Whirled, due to be available in October. The record was produced by Lisik and Steve Norgrove; mixed and mastered by Don Dixon (REM, Counting Crows). “Junior High School” is Brian Lisik on lead and backing vocals, guitars, percussion, organ, vibes; Steve Norgrove on bass and backing vocals.
With a wry step-down intro, Lisik invites you into a groovy song juxtaposed with the struggle with disillusionment we all experience, and especially during our time at school. The percussive accents on Brian Lisik’s entire album are stand – out, as are his stories.
I wrote “Junior High School” about a lot of things, but ultimately it’s an illustration of a society living on five-second soundbites – and how that can make you kind of afraid to leave the house. It’s also about the seedy underbelly of nostalgia; the bitterness that comes with admitting you’re past your peak. So it’s angry. And it has a vibraphone solo. — Brian Lisik
