Song Premiere: Lonesome River Band’s “Generosity Killed This Cat”

Listen & Watch Song Premieres

Americana Highways brings you Lonesome River Band’s “Generosity Killed This Cat” from their upcoming release Outside Looking In, available on May 24th. Outside Looking In was recorded by Van Atkins at Crossroads Studios in Arden, NC. “Generosity Killed This Cat” is Sammy Shelor on banjo, Brandon Rickman on guitar and lead vocals, Barry Reed on bass and vocals, Jesse Smathers on mandolin and vocals, Mike Hartgrove on fiddle, and Tony Creasman on drums and percussion.

With a lot of jangly indie-folk musicians trying out the banjo as strummed rhythm, it’s exciting to hear Lonesome River Band’s quality bluegrass pickin’ and playin’. With timeless stories of turning the tables, delivered in old timey rhythms and country style vocals, Lonesome River Band walks the best line between country and bluegrass.  “Generosity Killed This Cat,” is a classic lyrical tale of when karma goes wrong.

We sent Daniel Salyer a message asking for material, and when he sent “Generosity Killed This Cat” it was one that just stood out to us. Daniel is one of the finest songwriters in the business. He just knows how to compose a true bluegrass lyric and melody. When recording it, it seemed like it so quickly fell into place. Brandon’s soul, and Sammy and Barry’s iconic groove makes for a head-bobbin track. — Jesse Smathers, mandolinist
