Song Premiere: The March Divide’s “I Didn’t Mean It” from “Distractions” Series

Americana Highways is happy to bring you the March Divide’s “I Didn’t Mean It” which is part of Jared Putnam’s Distractions series (Slow Start Records). The song features the March Divide, a.k.a Jared Putnam, on vocals, guitar, piano and percussion, with Ernie Garcia on bass. It was mastered by Mike Major.

Starting out in an acoustic guitar arrangement with haunting, sturdy sustained piano notes, the song unfolds into a tale of last good-byes. “Somehow I got lost… I said let’s drive around and find something to do before we leave this town, let’s make a memory for when I’m gone.” We all live with the spectre of death, hinted at even in our more routine good-byes, and this song dwells in respect for that emotional place.

I wanted this song to almost read like a final conversation. When you think of me, remember the good times, not all the ways I fucked up. My friend Ernie Garcia played bass on this song, which was cool, for me. We’ve been really good friends, for over 20 years, and he’s always my favorite bass player. We’ve never really had much of a chance to work together, while each aggressively perusing our own musical ambitions. But now, we both have ways to record at home, so we’re able to do it, on our own time. – Jared Putnam, The March Divide
