REVIEW: Joel Paterson’s “Hi-Fi Christmas Guitar” on Bloodshot Records

Reviews

Devil in a Woodpile’s Joel Paterson’s Hi-Fi Christmas Guitar was just released on Bloodshot Records in plenty of time to help you get your swingy, jazzy, western holiday groove on this season — like you know you’ve been needing to.  If you like to counter-arm yourself with good quality music to fend off the mediocre offerings when you attend all the gatherings this season, this one is for you.

There’s some hand drumming and baritone in the mix, with Alex Hall (the Flat Five) and Beau Sample (Devil in a Woodpile) providing rhythms.   A mix of styles will regale you here, for example “Blue Christmas” is loping western swing; while “White Christmas” is jazzy with steel guitar, and “Jingle Bells” is rockabilly swing.   “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” resumes the western feel, and of course there’s the sock hoppin’ “Rock Around the Christmas Tree” with snappy snare.   Throughout this entire holiday extravaganza, the guitar work is intricate and captivating while the rhythms will help you hop and skip, or at least lope and saunter, the winter blues away.
