David Serby – Fishtail Cadillac

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of David Serby’s song “Fishtail Cadillac,” from his forthcoming album Low Hanging Stars.  Low Hanging Stars will be released on June 4th via Blackbird Record Label. The album was produced and engineered by Ed Tree, recorded at Treehouse Studio in San Gabriel California, and mastered by Mark Dann.

“Fishtail Cadillac” is David Serby on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Ed Tree on electric guitar; Taras Prodaniuk on bass; Scott Babcock on drums;  Carl Byron (Jim Lauderdale) on acoustic piano; and Darice Bailey on background vocals.  With its honky tonk rockin’ energy this song serves to lighten up the record with a comical song about a dude who wants his Stetson hat and his fishtail Cadillac back, never mind about the girl. Just delightful.

This song was written fairly recently and added last. Although there is humor in the record, it’s actually kind of dark and with Fishtail I was trying to inject a laugh or two into the album. This song is basically everything I was obsessed with when I was ten years old and listening to a pile of Jerry Reed 45s. There’s a character who thinks he knows what he’s doing but he doesn’t (just like in those Reed story songs), and it’s got honky tonks, and truckers and truck stops, and Cadillacs, and 8 tracks, and cokes and powered donuts. In 1974, this would have been my favorite song. I also get a laugh out of the fact that the guy really just wants his cowboy hat and his Caddie back…The girl can go. I really love the hard charging rhythm tracks from Taras Prodaniuk and Scott Babcock with gives what would probably be kind of a straight forward country song a real ‘50s rock and roll vibe. A real Chuck Berry kind of thing. -David Serby
