Anna May “Crying at Erewhon”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Anna May’s song “Crying at Erewhon” from her forthcoming album. It was produced by Anna May, engineered by Steve Rizzo, and mixed and mastered by Jonathan Berlin. The song was released via Blackbird Record Label.
“Crying at Erewhon” is Anna May on vocals and acoustic guitar; Leonel Fernando Navarro on lead guitar; and Dale Clark on guitar and bass.
As Anna tells us about the song, “When I first wrote ‘Crying at Erewhon,’ I wanted something that reflected the analog echo & golden – brimmed recordings of the Mamas and the Papas, the Carpenters, the Beach Boys, etc. to really give the song the glistening, vintage glow that I felt it deserved. But I decided that it would sound too dated and I wanted the song to sound like something brand new, and shiny, just like Erewhon, with a jolt of country twang as a homage to the subject of this song.”
Erewhon is an upscale food market, so, the concept of the core human experience of crying at Erewhon bears metaphoric levels. The footage of Erewhon in this video shows how modern yet industrial and gothic the store appears to be, and then the lyrical protagonist is inside the store shopping and processing criticism and insults that cut to the core. The juxtaposition of the cold, sterile beauty of the modern shopping experience with the warmth of human emotions is expressed pointedly yet gently in this song with Anna’s songbird vocals that hearken a bit to Joni Mitchell. Then the whole true-to-life contrast is mirrored again most adroitly in the video.
