Rachael Sage & the Sequins “Everyday” (maxi single)
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Rachael Sage’s version of the song “Everyday” (by Buddy Holly and Norman Petty) from her forthcoming album Under My Canopy. The album was produced by Rachael Sage with Mikhail Pivovarov, and recorded, mixed and mastered by Mikhail Pivovarov. It was recorded at Carriage House Studios in CT and The Creek in The Hudson Valley.
This version of the song is releasing as a maxi-single, with two other arrangements of the song also: a chamber version featuring piano and strings, as well as a full band version. It’s that vital.
“Everyday (Acoustic)” is Rachael Sage on lead & background vocals, Wurlitzer, lap percussion, glockenspiel, and finger cymbals; Kelly Halloran on violin; Dave Eggar on cello; Christie Lenée on acoustic guitar; and Kevin J. Killen on background vocals.
Rachael tells us about her version of this song: “I’ve always wanted to do a cover of Buddy Holly’s ‘Everyday’, because it’s probably my very favorite pop song ever. My Dad and I went to see ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ in the movie theatre when I was a kid, and his story and music impacted me enormously, from then on. A few years back, I was invited to perform this song at a Buddy Holly Foundation event at SXSW in Austin, so after that The Sequins had an arrangement featuring cello and violin in our repertoire and I just felt ready to include it – two versions actually! – on this album. For me as a vocalist, this song demands that I exist in pure love for the duration I’m singing it, and it’s deceptively simple. If someday I could write even one song with this much beauty and universality…well, let’s just say it reminds me of the power of music to move every fiber of my being. So much so that I felt compelled to record it with two entirely different arrangements, once we got into the studio! Whether I’m playing it on Wurlitzer or piano, the melody is a reminder for me of just how precious Buddy Holly’s legacy is, and how much potential artistry the world lost with his sudden passing. I hope I’ve honored him, just a little bit!”
Rachael and the Sequins’ version of this song is rich with strings and exquisite glockenspiel and then hushed in turns with Rachael’s clear delicate vocals captivating your ear, and overall the result is charming and delightful.
