Mark Newman “Tulsa”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Mark Newman’s song “Tulsa,” from the new album with legendary jam blues ensemble The Blues Project Live 2025, The Blues Project. The album was produced by The Blues Project, co-produced by Kurt Krauthamer, with editing, mixing, and mastering by Arne Frager of The Plant Studio Records. It was recorded live at Yoshi’s in Oakland, California and at Rancho Nicasio in Nicasio, California.
“Tulsa” was co-written with Walter Roberti as a commemoration of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. This event is now memorialized as the national event Juneteenth in June. “Tulsa” is Mark Newman on slide guitar and vocals; Walter Roberti on guitar and bass; and Shawn Murray on drums.
The lyrics are moving: “I was riding into Tulsa, used to be my hometown. Been digging for days through all that remains, ’cause they burned it to the ground.” A lot of sinister slide guitar sets the mood in a chilling but truthful style.
Mark says,”It’s amazing how a community could disappear and never come back. We never learned about this in school. Now it would all be over the news in living color.”
