Lora Kelley Where I Am Now
Americana artist and trauma-informed story work coach Lora Kelley recently released her newest album, Where I Am Now, which delves into themes of loss, recovery, and rebuilding life.
Produced by Jeremy Casella, Where I Am Now features the talents of Matt Stanfield (piano), Josh Hunt (drums), Jacob Lowery (bass), Nate Duggar (guitar) and Mike Payne (guitar), with Evan Redwine (Engineer).
The project began in 2019 with the creation of the song “Dust,” which later became the foundation for the album. In 2023, after sharing a new track with Jeremy Casella, the overarching concept of the record started to take shape.
Reflecting on the album, Kelley describes it as her personal “book” about the journey of healing and self-preservation—about nurturing a new, thriving existence while navigating uncertainty.
She shares, “I’ve worked with many people who chose to heal and move forward, facing both doubt and hope as they searched for life beyond their struggles. This album is dedicated to those on that journey. I see you, and I made it through. It was tough, but it was worth it.”
The album features nine songs, including the opener “The Man Behind the Curtain,” which stands out for its gentle, iridescent melody and Kelley’s expressive vocals. Her voice, with its reedy veneer and rippling with subtle shades, brings the song to life.
A standout track, “Maybe,” embraces profound honesty and emotional depth, telling the story of leaving behind a troubled family. “Dust,” the song that initiated the album, offers a soft, country-tinged melody with expansive guitar work that gives it a wide, open feel.
Another highlight, “Will You Hold My Arms Up?” showcases Kelley’s vocal range and clarity, blending Gaelic and gospel influences into a compellingly beautiful piece. This track is a personal favorite.
The title track begins with a mellow introduction and builds into a vibrant melody, allowing Kelley’s voice to shine through its varied tones.
With Where I Am Now, Lora Kelley offers a thoughtful exploration of the human experience and the process of renewal.
