Jacob Kynard “Missing Every Part Of It”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Jacob Kynard’s song “Missing Every Part Of It” from his forthcoming album. The song was recorded at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, MS. It was produced by Matt Patton (Drive-By Truckers), engineered by Clay Jones (Counting Crows, Elvis Costello, Al Green), mixed by Starlin Browning, and mastered by Brent Lambert (Waxahatchee) at Kitchen Mastering.
“Missing Every Part Of It” is Jacob Kynard on vocals and guitar; John Smith (The Dexateens) on electric guitar; Clay Jones on 12-string guitar; Matt Patton on bass; Jay Gonzales (Drive-By Truckers) on Hammond B3 organ; and Ryan Jewell (Rylee Walker, Woods) on drums and percussion instruments.
As Jacob tells us about this song, “I wrote this song a couple of years ago while I was dogsitting. The first time I played that song was for Samson and Ruby, the dogs. Dogs are great for testing out songs, you can usually tell pretty clearly whether they’re enjoying it or not. This song is pretty straightforward lyrically, but when the tempo changes in the middle it takes a slight turn. Even if you don’t have whatever it is you miss, you still have that same love inside of you because it doesn’t go away. It takes on other shades or shapes but it is a constant, especially when love is viewed as a choice rather than a feeling.
“I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I can’t imagine this song now without Jay’s organ pushing it along or Matt’s bass bubbling up in ways that make you grin or John’s guitar nailing everything down to the floor when it comes crashing in. I’m beyond grateful to have so many people I admire contributing to this. I never could have imagined it sounding like this back when I was watching those dogs. I just hope Samson and Ruby still like it.”
This song is authentic goodness. It’s a lot more introspective and rustic, especially in the beginning, than what you might expect with members of the Drive-By Truckers on board, which ultimately speaks to the versatility of everyone involved. Everything about this song, really, carries you along with it on its own trajectory – nothing is predictable or canned. And the sentiment Kind created with the lyrics – missing every part of something – can apply to so many experiences, not just the standard ones. This song and its casual singularity will have you on the edge of your set for what he’s offering up next.
