As Brad tells us, “Incinerating Miles” was the first song I wrote for my upcoming sixth studio album From What You’ve Built. It came at a time of personal turmoil on many fronts. I was in the midst of losing two jobs, and I was dealing with intense personal loss at the time. I would cope with these issues by aimlessly driving around coastal North Carolina for hours. With nothing more than my dog as a companion, I tried to exercise all the discontent by using the highway and asphalt as some sort of healing priest. I still find myself repeating this ritual in times of personal chaos.
“The video for the song was shot at many of the actual locations I frequented during this time, and the highways and byways I traversed. My producer Patrick Ogelvie and I were striving for an organic and old-school feel for the video. We tried to capture the desperation and isolation in the song by focusing solely on one character, and utilizing the landscape as the antagonist.”
There’s nothing like traveling the roads to get you to thinking, and observing. What has become of our landscapes, what context are we living in, what is happening to our lives. “You seek some indication of worth / Got this steaming cup, loaded with fury and caffeine / Got this life to burn Incinerating miles and my own dreams / haven’t slept since I was a boy, am I a ghost of my old self.” This song connects to that part in all of us that feel that something vital is slipping away.
