Lance Cowan – “Prayer For A Child”

Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Lance Cowan’s song “Prayer For A Child,” with Father’s Day on the horizon. This song was part of Lance’s recently released album Against the Grain, which was produced by Jason Stelluto and Scott Paschall; engineered by Clark Hagan with additional recording by Billy Davis; mixed by Matt Andrews; and mastered by Jim Loyd.

“Prayer For A Child” is Pat Flynn (acoustic guitars), Dan Dugmore (pedal steel guitar), Todd Smith (piano), Jay Turner (bass), Vinny Santoro (drums, percussion), Chip & Billy Davis (background vocals), and Lance Cowan (lead vocals).

Of the video, Lance tells us: “When I began to put this video together, I asked everyone who was involved in the project – musicians, producers, engineers, co-writers – to submit pictures of themselves as children or pictures of their children or grandchildren. I loved the pics everyone dug up for me!”

And, then, regarding the catalyst for this song, he says: “I wrote this song in the week before my first son was born. It’s an incredibly personal song for me, but I think it mirrors what most fathers feel in the days before the birth of their child – fear, uncertainty, doubt. But there is also an enormous attachment to your child, even before their birth.”

Seeds of doubt, feelings of wonder, fear of the rough world and the unknown: all these emotions are wrapped up together in this folk song of love and reverence for on the occasion of the birth of a child. Lance once again showcases his songwriting depth here, and just in time for Father’s Day.
