Jack Grace Band “I Will Complain”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Jack Grace Band’s song “I Will Complain” from his forthcoming album All The Above, which is set for release on April 4. The album was mixed by Pete Weiss and Hugh Pool, and mastered by Pete Weiss. The album cover is courtesy of artist Steve Keene.
“I Will Complain” is Jack Grace on guitar, vocals, banjo, harmonica, trumpet, xylophone, and backing vocals; Earl Poole Ball (Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Buck Owens) on piano; Bruce Martin (Tom Tom Club) on drums, percussion and backing vocals; and James Buhre on upright bass and backing vocals.
Jack Grace makes an observation in this song that’s profoundly disarming. It’s presented casually and almost whimsically by the band, and yet, it shines a light on one of the most persistently frustrating aspects of human behavior: complaining about nothing from the perspective of comfort: “This world is so cruel, killing anything for fuel / Call me and we’ll drive for miles to play your barbeque.” The music is carefree with a depth of skillful acoustic guitar layers offset with a chorus of gang vocals and an irresistible tambourine to make the point: “I will complain about anything at all, my life’s too precious.” When you’re at that level of complaining, when these minuscule happenings are the worst you can come up with, it’s time to make a shift to accentuate the positive!
They say write what you know. In my live show I list epic complaints I have heard on the road. I was playing Cape Cod and I overheard a woman telling the gentlemen at the gate, “This beach has too much sand” or the English chap on a beach in Spain complaining, “There are too many Spanish on this beach”; and that is just a sample of the beach series. But love overrides all complaints as well as being in a comfortable, safe place; when your complaints get small, you are likely doing ok. – Jack Grace
