Ray Duncan “Used To It”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Ray Duncan’s song “Used To It” from her recently released EP Laundromat. The EP was produced and engineered by Mike Fahey at Starbird Sound, and mastered by Charles Duncan at O-V Sonic.
Musicians on “Used To It” are Ray Duncan on vocals and guitar; Oliver Finch on lead guitar and bass; Zach Mosher on drums; and Rick Ochranek on organ. This video was filmed, directed, and edited by Mara Witt.
Ray pours her heart out playing in a roots rockin’ style while her lyrics are honest and raw: “I never thought I’d like the taste of liquor plain, but I didn’t know how it could hide my pain / I never thought I’d be this way but here I am and I’m afraid I won’t find the strength to change or take a stand.” It’s catchy and doesn’t sugarcoat the brutal struggle to get by, for times when you’re sleeping with your clothes on from the day before, and smoking in the bathtub.
“Used To It” is a letter from my Cigarette Self. It describes the experience of being so consumed by negative patterns and thoughts that you can’t imagine who you’d be without those things weighing you down. I think the first step towards making one’s life better is to admit to yourself that you’ve lost your way— and that is the essence of what this song is attempting to explore. – Ray Duncan
