Lisa Michelle Anderson – “Devil on My Back”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Lisa Michelle Anderson’s song “Devil on My Back” from her forthcoming album Get to Somewhere, due to be available on April 4. Get to Somewhere was produced by Johnny Irion, and mixed by Paul Kolderie and G. Winnard.

Musicians on “Devil on My Back” are Lisa Michelle Anderson on vocals; Johnny Irion on banjo, guitars, and vocals; G. Winnard on drums and vocals; Simon Guthrie on organ; and David Lehr on bass.

The song sounds like a stream of consciousness of one’s own inner thoughts, with Lisa’s vocals taking the role of the superego, and identifying the inner conflicts of consciousness: “I got the devil on my back and an angel in my heart. They never got along from the start.” A loping pace sets the tone for the inner dialogue. The video is a established within quite an alluring context of pink decor, hearts, and even a cake for the angelic foundation, but also there’s a roller coaster upside down, and cold winter dreamscapes. Barth Anderson was the videographer and collected the images for the video, with the desert image by Larry Wooster, and the video was edited by Michelle Pan.

Self doubt is a strange beast. It creeps up when you least expect it. We often try to reconcile self doubt by doing things that are bad for us. – Lisa Michelle Anderson
