Craig Greenberg – “She’s Gone and I’m Good For Nothing”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Craig Greenberg’s song “She’s Gone and I’m Good For Nothing” from his forthcoming album due out later this year. The album was produced and mixed by Wayne Silver and Craig Greenberg at the Ice Plant in Long Island City, Queens. Mastering was courtesy of Alex Psaroudakis.

“She’s Gone and I’m Good For Nothing” is Craig Greenberg on piano. all vocals, guitar, synth, and hand claps; Hiroyuki Matsuura on drums; and Tony Tino on bass. Heading in a new direction, Craig sets this song up on a basis of ragtime piano and muted vocals. It’s a lament of a push and pull relationship that ended up with her vanishing for good, and the aftermath of elevating your crushed self-esteem: “She would turn around and just disappear / I always thought we’d turn into something / but now she’s gone and I’m good for nothing.” A grand song showcasing talent and and a close affinity for New Orleans-esque styles.

The song is a new direction musically, I think, showing the influence New Orleans has had on me–I’ve been visiting the city regularly for almost 30 years, and performing there over the last 10, so sooner or later it was gonna seep into my writing.

And I spent 2 months living there during covid, which was when the bulk of the song was written.
Lyrically the song is pretty straight ahead, dealing with relationship anxiety and rejection. – Craig Greenberg
