Rip Gerber – “Three Chord Town”
Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Rip Gerber’s song “Three Chord Town,” the title track from his forthcoming album. Three Chord Town was recorded at Sound Emporium and Gnome Studios in Nashville. It was produced by Josh Riley, engineered by Connor Wang, and mastered by Josh Sebek.
“Three Chord Town” is Rip Gerber on vocals and guitar; Jake Baynes on electric guitar; Grifin Dinardo on drums; Mike Petillo on acoustic guitar; Jacob Schneiderman on bass; and Angela Morano on keyboard.
This video was created by Gonzalez Media Productions. Nostalgia and long shadows, divorce and neon signs frame Rip’s existential wondering: “give me three reasons why I should stay here / give me a ticket out of this three-chord town.” There’s a dose of struggle and blunt realism in the song, and the video portrays it visually. It’s not always sunny days and a warm sense of belonging, sometimes you just wonder why you’re here, whether it’s the town you’re in, the relationship you’re in or, whenever you were left behind. The song probes this feeling of misplacement well.
The line “Wedding book in my cellar, baby shoes barely worn” from “Three-Chord Town” came from a very real place. When my wife and I split after 28 years, she moved to New York, and I ended up in Nashville with all the stuff — bins of Brio trains, Uglydolls, plastic animals, kids soccer trophies, family Christmas ornaments and every family photo album. She didn’t take any of it, so now I keep it all in a storage unit, and every so often, I go in, pick through the memories, and get weepy… but also grateful. It’s painful, sure, but that line was my way of finding peace and honoring a beautiful chapter of my life that I’ll always cherish, even if it still stings a little. – Rip Gerber

“Rip, ‘Three Chord Town’ really hit me. The honesty in your lyrics is so raw and at times relatable. The mix of nostalgia and heartache in the song and video is powerful. Thank you for turning such personal moments into something so meaningful.
Thank you for the kind words. Rip
