Couldn’t Be Happiers “Plastic Bag Odyssey (I’ll Never Die)”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Couldn’t Be Happiers’ song “Plastic Bag Odyssey (I’ll Never Die),” a part of their singles series release. This song was produced and mixed by Doug Davis of Flytrap Music, with additional mixing assistance by Anand Gan. It was mastered by Brent Lambert in The Kitchen.
“Plastic Bag Odyssey (I’ll Never Die)” is Jodi Hildebran, writer and composer, on lead vocals, drums, and percussion; Jordan Crosby Lee, writer and composer, on background vocals and acoustic guitar; and Doug Davis on electric guitars, acoustic guitar, and bass.
“I was born to help you with your groceries” begins the tale of the life’s journey of a plastic bag, from shopping bag, to trash can liner, to being stuck on a seabird… and, the dismaying saga continues, because, truly, the plastic bag will never die, and will remain here far far too long. The Couldn’t Be Happiers may not have intended this to be a protest song, but it very well could be. The music is rootsy rock, with a touch of darkness and glorious vocals.
One day I was sitting in the salon getting my hair highlighted. Through the window, I saw this plastic bag tumbling across the hot asphalt parking lot. At that moment, I had this striking realization that this plastic bag might “outlive” me and everyone I knew. That thought, sobering as it was, also led to this curiosity of all the things that a plastic bag would see and do in its indestructible little plastic bag life. It might see the world; it might also harm it. Sitting there with foils in my hair, I opened the notes app on my phone. The lyrics were spilling out faster than I could type. I didn’t even let my hairdresser finish blow drying my hair – I was so anxious to get back to my car so I could sing the melody into a voice memo. That night, after work, I grabbed my guitar and finished the song.
This album, like the album before it and all that will follow, is dedicated to Jordan’s dad, John “Butchie” Lee. He was the very first CBH superfan. Even though he’s not around to listen to it, we know he would have loved it because he loved every song we ever wrote, from day one. – Jodi Hilebran Lee
