Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Mary Bue’s song “Bedding Down With The Deer,” from her forthcoming album The Wildness of Living and Dying. The Wildness of Living and Dying was produced by Steve Price and co-produced by Mary Bue.
“Bedding Down With The Deer” is Mary Bue on piano and vocals; Jeremy Ylvisaker on guitar; Steve Price on bass; Richard Medek on drums; Shannon Frid-Rubin on violin; and Julia Floberg on cello. With a dreamy darkness and choir-like harmonies framing Mary’s rich vocal storytelling, “Bedding Down With the Deer” confronts trauma with a haunting sequence that leads to strength and empowerment. “I feel safer with the deer, safer than my own damn bed.” There’s a little bit of dirty electric guitar and a slow pulsing pace rising to peaks with violin and resilience.
The collection of songs in The Wildness contemplate issues of trauma, uncertainty, compassion, and healing with music. They were composed in the years surrounding a traumatic carjacking experience in late 2020 and express strength in vulnerability, resilience of the human spirit, the growth experienced within a cycle of destruction, and, ultimately, transformation.
