Effie Zilch – Multitudes EP
This showcase starts with the sultry “Prayin’ Amos,” with a strong Effie Zilch vocal that is part gospel & part bluesy treatment. Nice touch. It’s the type of music that was once explored by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends decades ago. But the tune whets the appetite because it’s done so well.
There are 7 Multitudes (Drops Nov. 8/Redtone Records/27:27) that make up the EP by Effie Zilch (lead vocals/bgv) with songs written by Evanne Barcenas & Steve. The music was produced by Steve Wyreman (guitars/bass/piano/organ/synth/percussion/bgv/Nagoya harp).
“Taking Me Over,” slides in behind “Prayin’ Amos,” in an easy-listening spirit. Again, the vocals are the center point with a gospel thrust & poignant instrumentation. Nothing superficial or commercial. There’s a powerful expressive style at work along with its entertaining value.
The band doesn’t compromise its rock n’ roll persuasion since there is always a thread of a beat that forges forward & stabs of electric guitar sting with a sense of elan. “Up & Down Blues,” is more aggressive with the soulful backup voices & percussion at an accelerated pace. It all comes together with an imaginative performance.
A more upbeat rock n’ roll instinct surfaces with “Carousel,” which is dancehall-ready. The band has a well-balanced oeuvre & Effie has a gripping performance style. Fortunately, they don’t need any embellishment devices. The voice has sophistication & potency throughout each piece.
The Northern California duo have been making music together since their teens. Influenced by the Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix & the Staples Singers. I don’t hear the spaciness & San Francisco hippiedom of the Airplane or the rambunctious Hendrix signature style. However, yes, the Staples Singers is an ingredient. But it has more Bonnie Bramlett & Julie Driscoll in its savoring flavor.
There is always a tight groove that drives their music, with no frayed edges or showboating. Just a beautiful balladry with varied tonalities in Effie’s range. “Only Fools” does percolate nicely with a soulful distinctive Hendrix outlaying. So, maybe my first thought was premature. This is laid out with fire.
The duo has a wonderfully original presentation. Yes, it’s based on things that came before them, but they know how to take what’s worth taking & then decorate it with their own personality & character. They’re following an astute direction & they do indeed sound excellent together.
