Matthew Squires – “Song of a Cactus”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Matthew Squires’ song “Song of a Cactus” from his forthcoming future album. “Song of a Cactus” was recorded and mixed by Matthew.

“Song of a Cactus” is Matthew Squires on guitar and vocals; and Cameron Scanlon on drums and synthesizers. Sometimes the keyboards and synthesizer really alter the sound, and in this case it’s certainly true in the second half of the song, as they gently punctuate the acoustic guitar and give is a resonance.  Matthew has an innocent appeal as this song of unfolding and growth: “I’ve never seen the cactus hesitate to sing in spite of no one listening.”

I tried a few iterations of this song with a band for my last EP, but it all came out too complicated instrumentally.  I decided to keep the original iPhone demo recording of guitar and vocals and get my friend Cameron Scanlon to help me flesh it out with synthesizers and drums..  I think it marks a bit of a different approach for me than I’m used to and I’m hoping to keep exploring this more synth heavy direction in the future. I wanted to make sure I released it before the election as my little quixotic attempt at creating a psychical place of refuge in anticipation of whatever direction the world might lurch. – Matthew Squires
