Benjamin Cartel – “Not Myself”

Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Benjamin Cartel’s song “Not Myself,” which was produced by Charles Newman; recorded at Cottage Sounds in Los Angeles; mixed by Matt Anthony at Engine Audio in NYC; and mastered by Tom Rogers at Atomix Studios in Los Angeles.

“Not Myself” is Benjamin Cartel in lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and drums;  Kendall Jane Meade on backing vocals; Ryan Smith on lead guitar; Ed Maxwell on bass; Charles Newman on keyboards and percussion; and Claudia Chopek on violin.

This video stars Benjamin Cartel and Kendall Jane Meade and was produced by Benjamin. It was edited and directed by Martin Hedman, with Matt Clements on camera in Central Park in New York City, and Finn Loughran on camera in Los Angeles.  The drone footage of Central Park is unreal, the long distance relationship is portrayed with eery accuracy. This video highlights the interpretation of song as being about the pain of separation, and the dull feeling of being in relationship but not being with the person.  The overall song evokes that feeling of surreal detachment: whether it’s losing touch with the body we had in youth, watching family members fade, a long distant relationship, and more: it’s all a limbo state, and the song feels like that and captures that feeling completely.

The video paints the picture of a confessions of separated lovers, but lyrics of the song were actually inspired by a walk with my elderly father who could only move with the aid of a cane. Taking in the reality of his new frailty shook me deeply. I suddenly longed for the past and felt disoriented for a moment . I wanted to comfort him and console myself at the same time. – Benjamin Cartel
