Daniel Anderson – “Rich Man (I Wish I Was)”

Americana Highways is premiering this song by Daniel Anderson, “Rich Man (I Wish I Was),” from his forthcoming album. The album was produced and mixed by Daniel Anderson and Heroic Dose; engineered and recorded by Ryan Masecar at Car Shop Recording in Raleigh, NC; and mastered by Jeff Carroll at Bluefield Mastering in Raleigh.

“Rich Man (I Wish I Was)” is Daniel Anderson on guitar, vocals, congas, and shaker;  T.A. James on bass; Ryan Masecar on drums; and Matthew Etherington on clavinet and Hammond organ. With blues rock driving straight toward the goalposts, this song taps into something universal: “I wish I was a rich man, so I won’t be poor no more, so the debt collector would stop calling me.”  Lyrically this is classic blues simplicity that gets straight to the point and sticks to it, while the electric grooves and solos dance with the Hammond organ in turns. It hits the sweet spot.

“Rich Man (I Wish I Was)” began as lyrics based on a past relationship where my former partner and I’s families were from different socioeconomic backgrounds and I was writing as a way to vent about it. I had been going through the ringer mentally and rewrote our other single, “Stuck With Trouble,” and decided to revisit this one also. I wanted it to be more about the struggle in general that so many of us go through with trying to make ends meet. Musically I had been on a Mississippi Fred McDowell kick, which I find myself being on a lot, and I came up with the riff with him in mind, but with some rock and roll added to it. When we went to record it at Car Shop Recording, we decided to go for a The Band type of vibe as far as the rhythm section goes. Ryan Masecar went straight for a Levon Helm type of groove which fit perfectly. When I went to mix, I felt like the track needed more density though so I added congas and shaker, plus several layers of spot harmony vocals, and to add more grease, I called up Matthew Etherington, leader of Durham-based organ trio “Organ Failure”, to play clavinet and organ. We’re very pleased with the way it turned out and are excited to get this out to the public. – Daniel Anderson
