SJae – “Paper Hearts”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of SJae’s song “Paper Hearts,” the title track from her forthcoming EP. Paper Hearts was written, produced and mixed by Samantha Powell and mastered by Jonas Westling.
SJas is variously known as Sammy Jay, and Samantha Powell, and you may have heard her compositions before on Netflix or Disney. Her musical versatility stretches from songwriting to singing and piano to production.
“Paper Hearts” is SJae on piano and strings; Hutch Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt) on bass; MB Gordy (Doobie Brothres) on drums; and Diego Garcia (Mercedes Sosa) on guitar.
“Paper Hearts” taps into the perpetual longing to break free, and the gentle regretfulness is palpable in every note: “Who forgot to lock the gate? The horse is gone, I don’t think she’ll be back again… we’re just paper hearts floating in the wind.” Our core humanity is always restlessness and fragility, and SJae nails it.
I’m hoping people will find this song cathartic, as I wanted to express a feeling that every single one of us are ultimately so fragile, we’re all just trying our best with what we have to work with, and that most of us don’t have it all figured out. – SJae
