Ashtyn Barbaree “Reckless Nights”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Ashtyn Barbaree’s song “Reckless Nights” from her forthcoming album Sent Through The Ceiling, scheduled for release on October 25.  Sent Through The Ceiling was produced by Ashtyn; engineered and mixed by Ryan Ceola at Haxton Road Studios in Bentonville, Arkansas.  The digital and cd mastering was done by Ryan Ceola and the vinyl was mastered by Justin Douglas at King Electric Recording. The record was partially funded by the Artists 360 program by Mid America Arts Alliance.

“Reckless Nights” is Ashtyn Barbaree on lead vocals and piano; Phillip Cannon on backing vocals; Jacob Campbell on electric guitar; Matt Nelson on piano and organ; Derek Weiand on drums; Garrett Jones on bass; and Ty Dunn on classical guitar.

Rich piano and organ chords, interspersed with electric guitar, resound on the powerful, reflective song: “Through all the noise and the dust, We found a connection / When I look into your eyes, I feel a warm reflection / I know it won’t last forever, But while we’re here /  Would you come a little bit closer, there’s no one here.”  Blending guitar tones with piano and organ in an unhurried fashion creates a power effect for Ashtyn Barbaree’s song of hoping against hope for some solace and companionship along the way, however fleeting it may be.

“Reckless Nights” was written as part of an intriguing podcast project with NPR’s Arts & Letters Podcast, where I discovered the story of Sandy and Wayne. Their romance—between a lead inspector and a dirt foreman during the construction of the Bobby Hopper tunnel in Northwest Arkansas—served as the inspiration for this song’s take on fleeting passion and impulsive decisions. For me, “Reckless Nights” captures the essence of living in the moment, embracing spontaneity, and finding love in the most unexpected places. — Ashtyn Barbaree
