Steve Baskin and the Fourteens – “Do What You Wanna Do”
Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Steve Baskin and the Fourteens’ song “Do What You Wanna Do,” from their recent album Love Is Hard. The album was produced by Steve Baskin and Rich Herring and mixed by Rich Herring at Trax Productions in Nashville. It was recorded by Lee Davis at Lee Davis Studio in Maysville, GA with additional tracks recorded at Underground Studio in Atlanta, GA. Love is Hard was mastered by Alex McCullough at True East Mastering.
“Do What You Wanna Do” is Steve Baskin on vocals and electric guitar; Roger Brainard on electric guitar; Mary Gill on backing vocals; Mark Sobus on bass; Geoff Gill on drums and percussion; Lee Davis on organ; Alex Rodiek on trumpet; and Ben Davis on tenor saxophone.
The video was filmed by Cameron Baskin and edited by Chris McErlain. Cubby the Bear footage with permission. A video of Steve within an old analogue television interspersed with black & white cartoon scenes from “Cubby the Bear” cartoons is tremendously entertaining.
This song was co-written by Steve with Roger Brainard, a team-up that, judging by the result, is a winner. “Would you do what you wanna do / Would you take the thing you could have bought / Would you do what you wanna do / If you knew that you won’t get caught.” These are actually some quite serious and probing questions regarding human nature, and perhaps the differences between us, set to a swanky groove that carries for miles.
For me, “Do What You Wanna Do” explores that existential question of what kind of person one is. What would you do if no one is looking and you know you won’t get caught.
I was at a dinner with old high school friends who I hadn’t seen in decades. They were telling crazy stories about the things they would do back then – drinking, drugs, drag racing, on and on. I was traveling around in a rock band on the weekends, so I didn’t have time for that kind of stuff. I would’ve been too scared anyway.
But it got me going down the path with this tune. Then Roger (Brainard) showed up with this cool-ass groove, and we quickly had one of my favorite songs. – Steve Baskin
