Andrew Weiss and Friends – “No It’s Not Okay”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Andrew Weiss’ new song “No, It’s Not Okay” from his forthcoming album the world’s smallest violin.  the world’s smallest violin was produced by Andrew Weiss, Pete Donnelly, Scott Hirsch, and Daniel Wright; mixed by Pete Donnelly and Scott Hirsch; and mastered by Will Borza.

“No It’s Not Okay” is Andrew Weiss on lead and backing vocals, electric guitar, percussion, and synthesizers; Pete Donnelly on bass and backing vocals; Matt Beck on electric guitar and organ; and John Venezia on drums. This is a song about being on the road, longing for someone or something, and not being sure whether or how it’s ever going to come together again: “While my guitar tries to heal me, your heart tries to steal me… even when I’m so far from I’m so used to being alone, that I don’t know the difference anymore.” With their heartland rock style, Andrew and friends will actually steal your heart just a little bit on this one.

At the end of 2020, during the writing process for this album, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy released his book How To Write One Song. As a result of reading the book, a few new songs started to fall out of me, one of them being “No, It’s Not Okay.” Part of the book includes a few songwriting exercises that proved to be successful for Tweedy, and one of these guided exercises helped me to land the opening line, “I’ve been observing my piano, like a dog observes its shadow, wondering if it’s having one of those days like me,” and the rest of the song evolved from there. This song was the first song that Pete, Matt, John, and I recorded in our sessions together, so it will always be a special one for me. – Andrew Weiss
