Charlie Overbey – In Good Company
Charlie Overbey has a new album, In Good Company, which is a roots rock bluesy extravaganza that places Charlie in very good company. Each song features a heavy hitting electric guitar playing guest: among them, Marcus King, Nils Lofgren, Chris Masterson, and Duane Betts.
“Punk Rock Spy,” featuring Stuart Mathis, has heavy hitting rock harmonica a la Thomas Blues and piano a la Kyle Tormey in this electric blues rockin’ ode to honky tonk heaven.
Marcus King plays guitar on “Champagne, Cocaine, Cadillacs and Cash” and it’s a groove with a dose of sincerity: “I’ve moved on a long time ago.” “So baby take your champagne, cocaine, your Cadillacs and cash / go on and head on down that highways far away from me and my stash.”
“Life of Rock n Roll” hosts Dyane Betts and it’s the luck of the hard life on the road: “when I woke up thinking about my friends died before they got to even begin / and I could have been with them but the Rhythm had a miss some good luck .” “Go live the life of rock and roll” is a celebration, the piano rides are grand the the electric guitar solos kick ass.
“The Innocence” features Nils Lofgren on guitar and stretches out a bit into heartland rock territory, fittingly. Charlie flexes his vocals in a grittier manner on this one, with a vulnerability showing in the tones, and Nils smokes the guitar solos up good.
All the tunes rock. Albums like this one are fun because in addition to being great rockin’ grooves, they highlight some of our contemporary guitar masters one by one, which is just cool. Find our previous coverage here: REVIEW: Charlie Overbey’s “Broken Arrow” Shoots Straight
