In low bass vocals, Jason delivers the meaningful lines: “I’m no Gandhi / No Genghis Khan / No Maharishi / Or Louis Farrakhan / ‘Cause I’m Me,” and the effect taken as a whole has a touch of the Sopranos theme. You’ll feel larger and more empowered by the time you’ve listened to first measure. It’s no wonder this song was a theme song for a film.
I always felt this song was cinematic. Then a few years ago Gary’s friend Nick Cat was participating in a film competition, and he loved the refrain of NJD, so he used it for the title of his short film and put the phrase, “I’m certainly no James Dean.” in the dialogue. I worked up this version of the song for him to use, and he loved it. He said it made him want to make the film better, so it was as good as the song. High compliment! – Jason Montero
