Eden Brent – “He Talks About You”
Americana Highways presents this premiere of Eden Brent’s song “He Talks About You” from her forthcoming album Gateway Blues, which is scheduled for release on June 21 via Yellow Dog Records. This song will be available on June 17. The album was produced by Bob Dowell; recorded by Benedic Lamdin at Fish Factory Studio with additional recording and mixed by Matt Ross-Spang at Southern Grooves, Memphis, Tennessee. It was mastered by Kim Rosen of Knack Mastering in Ringwood, New Jersey. This song was co-written by Eden Brent and Bob Dowell.
Musicians on “He Talks About You” are Eden Brent on vocals; Rob Updegraff on guitar; Pat Levett on drums; and Bob Dowell on bass and Wurlitzer. Eden Brent hails from the Mississippi Delta, and has earned a reputation for being a whoopin’ juke joint entertainer who wrings every sound from the piano keys. On this song she hands over the Wurlitzer keys to Bob Dowell, who renders it unearthly and sublime, while Eden reveals, in a sultry southern style, that he talks about you, all the time. The tones are all 60’s groove. Great song.
This song is written from the perspective of the other woman having an extramarital affair with a married man. It seems quite common for a wife to be jealous of the other woman, but very often a philandering man has no serious intentions with the other woman other than to have a good time. In this song the other woman explains to the wife that although you might be envious, your husband ‘talks about you all the time.’ I wrote this as more of a ballad, but Bob transformed it into a really upbeat, danceable tune, and I added the keyboard tremolo vamp that is reminiscent of a 60’s or 70’s rock keyboard. In the studio, Bob played the Wurlitzer electric piano which is enhanced with a vintage Maestro phase shifter, giving it a truly iconic keyboard sound. – Eden Brent
