Hannah Connolly – “Shadowboxing”

Americana Highways presents this video premiere of Hannah Connolly’s song “Shadowboxing,” the title track from her recently released album. The album was produced by Eric Cannata and Jon O’Brien; engineered by Jon O’Brien with drum engineering by Adam Schreiber; mixed by Ryan Nasci; and mastered by Elisa Pangsaeng.

This live in-studio version of the song is Hannah Connolly on vocals and acoustic guitar; Ben Greenberg on guitar; Jordan Ruiz on pedal steel; Dave Pelusi on bass; Levi Matuls on drums; and Roan Disel on guitar.

The video was captured by Ryan Neal Cordwell with audio by Music Box Studios owner and co-producer of the album, Jon O’Brien. A live video taken and recorded in the studio, this give you the feel of being a fly on the wall when the album was being produced.  Hannah’s sweet rosy vocals and the hazy tempo with the pedal steel trading off with the electric guitar, will grab your attention and get you thinking about that person who told you those white lies. “When all is said and done, we learn the hard way.”

About the video: We captured this live performance of “Shadowboxing” not long after finishing the album, in the same live room where we recorded the song at Music Box Studios in Idyllwild, CA.

About the song: I often write very autobiographical songs, but that wasn’t the case with Shadowboxing. This was the first time I wrote a song where, even though the lyrics felt complete, the big picture meaning was still a bit of mystery to me. I love how every time I sing it, the song feels alive – as if it could reveal itself more.

The fact that I was still discovering “Shadowboxing” was part of the reason I was drawn to it as the title for the record. Thematically it fits, because on the whole the record reflects on the dance that can occur between self-sabotage and growth, but I also like the way that for me it is also a nod to embracing uncertainty. It’s a hidden reminder for me to allow magic into the process and leave space for things to unfold along the way. – Hannah Connolly
