The institutional strictures of school and other aspects of our culture are quite stunning in their scope. The control of movement and autonomy and then the advice on what you should and shouldn’t do is limited. In this song, Miranda Hardy “just says no” to all of that, holding up a life outside the box as the side of the fence that’s truly greenest. “I’ll quit all these fancy prospects … I’m peeking over now through your picket fence and your grass is looking brown and all your leaves are sickened.”
I wanted to show how soul-sucking it can be when you prioritize meeting expectations over your own authenticity – and what better way to do that than a nostalgic amalgamation of teen video tropes? – M. Hardy
