Heather Little – “Gunpowder & Lead”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Heather Little’s song “Gunpowder & Lead,” a co-write with Miranda Lambert and featuring Van Plating.  This song is from Heather’s forthcoming album By Now, which is due to be released on April 19th via Need to Know Music.  This song will be available on April 5.

By Now was produced By Brian Brinkerhoff and Frank Swart; recorded at Skunkworks Studio in Capitola, California; engineered By Brian Brinkerhoff; mixed by Scott Halliday in Dublin, Ireland; and
mastered by Justin Weis at Trakworx in South San Francisco.

“Gunpowder & Lead” is Heather Little on vocals and acoustic guitar, and Van Plating on violin and vocals.  This song is as intense as they come. If you have heard Miranda Lambert’s version, this one is darker and has the extra verse that didn’t make it in time to the record.  If you haven’t heard Miranda’s version, no matter, just turn this song up and get ready for some cold chills between Little’s gutsy voice and Plating’s low growl on violin. “Got to learn little girls are made of gunpowder and lead.”

I wrote this in 2006 with Miranda Lambert. I had parts of the verse to start with, and she came over and came up with the first line of the chorus, and we basically went line for line for the rest of the chorus and the verse that begins “…half past ten. Another six-pack in…” She had to leave and go to a gun safety class, from which she called me and we worked on some missing lines and details and the *hook.* She had to go back to class from the break, so she hung up. I kept writing and a short time later, I scribbled on the back of a Walmart receipt what I thought of as the “second verse” (that you hear on this record). I called her and told her I wrote a middle verse for that gunpowder song. She said, “Oh… well, we cut it this morning.” So that verse never made it to her version, but I’ve always included it when I’ve played it. It just feels more authentic to me personally that way. – Heather Little
