King Dream – “If it’s Magic (it Must Be Real)”

King Dream has a new song, “If it’s Magic (it Must Be Real),” from his forthcoming album Glory Days V, due to be released on January 19. The album was engineered by Ian Pellicci at Brothers Chinese Recording with
additional keys engineered by Peter Labberton, and it was mixed by Jay Pellicci.

“If it’s Magic (it Must Be Real)” is Nick Cobbett on drums; Cody Rhodes on shells, tambourine, cymbals, and garden weasels; Scott Padden on bass; Pat TuGlynn on Wurlitzer, Nord Celeste, and Moog Grandmother; Adam Nash on lead guitar; Jeremy Lyon on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars; Marcus Stephens on clarinets; and Graham Patzner on violins.

“If it’s Magic (it Must Be Real)” is a dreamy, 70s Elton John-esque style song including strings, synths and scrunchy sounds offsetting the big solid beat beat and cinematic vocals.  Lots of vibration and vocals sometimes sounding like they are coming from behind the sheer curtain of synth, all experimenting and pushing conventional limits on what constitutes a song.  And “baby if it’s magic it must be real.”

On “If it’s Magic (it Must Be Real)” I went for a vibe that sounded like if Feist covered “Bennie and the Jets.” The song is in an odd meter, features bold, crunchy drum production, reeds courtesy of Marcus Stephens (Con Brio), and a string section orchestrated by Graham Patzner (Whiskerman). Other production choices such as the wide panned vocal double, leslie guitar arpeggios on the choruses, exotic percussion instruments, and dreamy celeste and Moog bass synthesizer all contribute to the richly textured and diverse color palette the track is built on. Musically, this one of the most ambitious songs on the album and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it turned out. Lyrically, the song is about how the longer you fight for, and don’t give up on, your dreams, the more meaningful they become. The process of bringing this song to life is evidence of this statement, and a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts, in that it’s a rather lavish ode to the very pursuit of creating art for the sake of art, if that makes sense. – King Dream
